Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor — Which Direction Is Better?

Does it matter which direction you sail? It’s one of the most common questions we get — and yes, there are real differences.

**Luxor to Aswan (most popular)**
Most cruises sail this direction: north to south, travelling upstream. You start with Luxor’s extraordinary West Bank monuments — the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens — then head south through Edfu and Kom Ombo before reaching Aswan. The advantage: you begin with the most dramatic sights while your energy is highest. The disadvantage: you end in Aswan, which for many travellers requires backtracking north.

**Aswan to Luxor**
Sailing downstream (south to north), you begin in Aswan — arguably the Nile’s most beautiful city. You visit Philae Temple and the High Dam first, then sail north through Kom Ombo, Edfu, and arrive in Luxor for the grand finale of the Valley of the Kings. The advantage: you end in Luxor, which has excellent onward connections. Many travellers find saving Luxor for last is the better narrative arc.

**Our verdict**: For most international visitors flying into and out of Cairo, Luxor to Aswan is the more practical choice. But if you’re ending with an Aswan-to-Abu Simbel day trip, starting in Aswan makes more sense.

Both directions visit identical sites — only the order changes.
